Johnny Ball launches new lecture series at the Science Centre

Quick-stepping off the Strictly dance floor, veteran TV presenter Johnny Ball returned to his scientific roots as he delivered the eagerly anticipated Christmas Lecture at Staffordshire University's new Science Centre.

The Christmas lecture was the first in a new series of exciting science-themed public lectures which aim to appeal to all sections of the community. It followed hot on the heels of the opening of the University's £30 million Science Centre – a facility also used by science students from Stoke-on-Trent College and City of Stoke-on-Trent Sixth Form College.

Johnny, presenter of several series of popular science and technology programmes intended for children, said it was "a wonderful thrill" to give the first ever Christmas Lecture in the Science Centre.

He said: "I wanted the lecture to blend Michael Faraday's first ever Christmas Lecture and the foundations of the Industrial Revolution with the modern day advances in science and technology that give us so much hope for the future.

Head of the School of Sciences, Dr John Wheeler: "The public lectures provide us with a platform to tell the community about our scientific expertise and these are complemented by a host of themed exhibitions and informal discussions around topics of scientific interest."
